A key design feature of the South Wharf complex, which reflects Melbourne's unique grid of retail laneways, cafe strips and shopping areas, was to create variation in texture via variously shaped and sized cladding.
Where a clean, sharp external pattern was desired, Azure™* and L'attitude® panels from BlueScope Facade Solutions provided flat surfaces with attractive straight joints. Milenko Bacalja of Direct Architects said the project called for a distinct, patterned modularity. "The installation jointing and surface flatness accuracy of the BlueScope Facade Solutions panels emphasised the contrast between surface geometry and form, and provided the necessary proportional, textural and geometric complement across the various retail, residential and commercial building types," said Mr Bacalja.
"We are very happy with the final appearance and quality of the Azure and L'attitude systems," he added.
Contexx project manager Luke Stambolis said the BlueScope panels were a key factor in appeasing the town planners and creating a point-of-difference for the building elements.
"The BlueScope product was able to compete against composite aluminium claddings while offering better aesthetic values for the architect and client." he said.
"Additionally, the robust nature of the Facade Solutions panels means they can be used in public spaces at pedestrian height and require minimal ongoing maintenance," said Mr Stambolis.
