The four-storey Operations Centre reflects Sydney Ports' commitment to high-quality and sustainable buildings. Facade Solutions designed, constructed and installed the cladding system.
Architects Jackson Teece had worked with Facade Solutions on previous projects and knew the BlueScope Steel business could meet the design brief.Facade Solutions' ability to fully customise panels to suit job requirements was especially an advantage.
Architect Andrew Oxnard of Jackson Teece said: "The nature of the concealed fixing system and open joints, together with engineered custom flashings and trims, provide an appearance of refinement and sophistication and set the building apart from other buildings using industry-standard cladding systems with sealed joints."
The building is only a few metres away from the ocean, so all the panels are fabricated from marine-grade aluminium rather than steel. The facade system is fully warranted for up to 20 years.
Standard Building Facades Azure™ profiles were used, and an entirely new panel tagged L'azure – a hybrid of L'attitude® and Azure™ – was shop-drawn, prototyped and trialled before being accepted for the job.
The differing panel systems are combined to demonstrate bespoke modular effects. The two different panel types are used throughout the building in three sizes, decreasing in size from top-to-bottom over three stories.
A staggered jointing effect was required for a large part of the building's cladding, which was achieved with double-battening and cover panel detail. A standard 3mm vertical joint provided a seamless horizontal emphasis to the remaining clad areas."The client required a facade system that was robust and reliable, yet clinical and refined in appearance," said Andrew Oxnard. "A feature building in this difficult environment requires a high-quality product, and this is what we've got."
